About

Transformative Facilitation Definition

Transformative facilitation is an equity-centered approach to leading learning experiences that prioritize engagement, inclusion, and real-world impact. It combines strong content knowledge with responsive, community-building practices that empower participants to reflect, connect, and take action.

At Girls Leadership, transformative facilitation is grounded in five core competencies: Engagement, Inclusivity, Content Mastery, Adaptability, and Application.

Transformative Facilitation Framework

Purpose & Objective

The purpose of this rubric is to provide a structured framework for evaluating and enhancing facilitation skills in training sessions. By assessing key competencies such as engagement, inclusivity, content delivery, adaptability, and impact, this tool supports facilitators in refining their approach, ensuring meaningful participant experiences, and achieving the desired learning outcomes. The rubric serves as both a guide for self-reflection and a resource for providing constructive feedback to improve training effectiveness.

The Girls Leadership standards for high-quality transformative facilitation are:

Engagement & Interaction

Effectively incorporates play and interactive activities that promote deep engagement; fosters a strong sense of community among participants; actively listens and links participant comments to larger themes; encourages broad participation and ensures balanced involvement.

Cultural Awareness & Inclusivity

Demonstrates deep understanding of racial, gender, and cultural implications; fosters a safe, inclusive space for dialogue and learning; effectively uses communication strategies that promote inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding.

Content Knowledge & Delivery

Demonstrates mastery of content; clearly connects Social Emotional Learning skills to belonging, healing, and justice-centered practices; uses clear instructions and well-organized visuals.

Adaptability & Responsiveness

Reads the room well, adjusts facilitation style to meet participant needs, and navigates challenges effectively; manages conflicts, challenging personalities, and off-topic discussions with ease; re-frames inflammatory statements into productive discussions.

Impact & Application

Empowers participants with clear strategies for applying skills in real-world settings; encourages thorough exploration of alternatives and differences; closes discussions effectively with clear wrap-up points.

Transformative Facilitation Training

At Girls Leadership, we are committed to cultivating facilitators who can effectively guide participants through both the content and the overall learning experience. Our goal is to ensure a consistent standard of high-quality facilitation across all training sessions, regardless of the facilitator. Girls Leadership programs team members are developed to be visionary public speakers—meeting the highest standards of facilitation excellence. To that end, any program’s team member who delivers trainings, workshops, participates in panel discussions, conference sessions, or any teaching or public speaking event on behalf of Girls Leadership, must successfully complete the Transformative Facilitation Training.
