APA SAMHSA Summer Medical Student Program

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is committed to fostering diversity in the psychiatric workforce, and is working to engage people from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives as future leaders in psychiatry. The APA's Summer Medical Student Program (SMSP) is designed to champion diversity, build an inclusive psychiatric workforce, broaden medical student’s understanding of psychiatry and their career options, and prepare future leaders to successfully enter the field of psychiatry.

In SMSP, medical students participate in the program for 6 months. During the program, they are exposed to various psychiatric subfields during a month long virtual live webinar series hosted by leaders in the psychiatric field. They will also receive mentorship from psychiatric residents who can assist them through experiential advice on academic and professional goal setting. In addition, participants receive a $500 textbook certificate for APA Publishing and a program specific cultural humility learning pathway in the APA Learning Center alongside networking opportunities and funded attendance to the APA Annual Meeting.

 

Acquired Skills / Knowledge

Earning Criteria

Participants are required to complete the terms of their contract with the program. They must attend 80% of our virtual webinars, complete their learning pathway, follow the guidelines of their mentorship contract, maintain correspondence with the fellowship team, and maintain good standing at their academic institutions. Attendance at the APA Annual Meeting is optional.
