APA SAMHSA Rising Psychiatry Scholars Program

by American Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is committed to fostering diversity in the psychiatric workforce, and is working to engage people from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives as future leaders in psychiatry. The APA's Rising Psychiatry Scholars Program (RPSP) is designed to champion diversity, build an inclusive psychiatric workforce, broaden undergraduate student’s understanding of psychiatry and their career options, and prepare future leaders to successfully enter the field of psychiatry.

In RPSP, 2-year tribal college and community college students participate in the program for one year. During this year, they are exposed to different career options in psychiatry along with professional development through a monthly live webinar to increase their chances of matriculating to a 4-year university, and eventually, medical school. They receive mentorship from current medical students, a funded Kaplan Critical Thinking course to prepare them for standardized testing, an AAMC MSAR subscription to research universities and medical schools, and have the option to attend The Future Leaders Academy. An in-person opportunity to tour university and medical school campuses and hear from industry leaders on their career journey and their current research.
